Steps For Buying

  • Decide how much you have to spend on your new car purchase.
  • Check to see what incentives and rebates are available on the car you want to buy.
  • Find out the cost the dealer pays for the vehicle.  This can be located from various sources such as www.carcostcanada.com
  • If you are financing the car, uses a payment calculator to determine the monthly payment for the car you want to buy (and remember to apply the incentives to the purchase price).
  • If you haven't already done so, test-drive all the cars you are considering buying.
  • Solicit quotes from multiple dealers including in person, by phone and online.
  • If you are trading in your old car, research the market value of your trade-in.  Used vehicle sales websites such as www.autotrader.ca are an excellent source for finding retail pricing for comparable vehicles.
  • Remember to always ask for things you want in the negotiation (the salesperson is never going to offer up anything that is of value).  Never concede anything (even those that are unimportant to you.  Use them as negotiation tradeoff points. )
  • Once you've reached a good price, ask the salesperson to confirm the agreement in writing, identifying any pending conditions.
  • Inspect the car for assembly defects (e.g. misaligned doors), and shipping damage (e.g. dents, dings and scratches) before taking final delivery.
